A tribute to Shrewsbury's U-12 Champions By Jim McKinley
March 23, 2007

2005-2006 was quite a season to remember for the girls of Shrewsbury Youth Soccer. Playing in the Nashoba Valley Youth Soccer League, the SYS Hurricanes amassed an impressive 32-0 run to take their first ever Division One 8v8 state title at the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions held by MYSA.

Honored with a trip to the State House by State Representative Karyn Polito, the girls were treated to a tour, luncheon, a special tribute from Governor Mitt Romney, as well as state certificates commemorating their achievement.

The most important things learned by the team throughout the entire year: TEAMWORK and FRIENDSHIP.

They learned that it was not always about being the best, scoring the most, playing the most or worrying about who got more time than someone else on the field. What mattered most was growing and learning from one another as they grew as players. It was all about fun and dedication.

It was about desire, passion, determination, and above all else TEAM efforts that got them to the top. Were there individual efforts and outstanding plays? No question, but all for the good of the team which makes this group so special.

Tactically and technically the girls grew stronger and stronger as the season progressed. They also grew mentally strong through regular season games and tournaments. Learning all along the way as they peaked for the Tournament of Champions!

Thanks to all the Moms and Dads for their dedication to practices, away tournaments, team get-togethers, passion and commitment. Winning teams start from winning parents who let their kids play … they grow with them and encourage along the way. We were very fortunate to have a strong tight knit group that never complained, that grew very close and will always remember the good fortune we were able to enjoy!
