Clean sweep for Mariner girls
October 24, 2006

Mariner improved their league record to 4-2-0 with a dominating 6-1 victory over Charles River United. Minus their starting sweeper, the entire Mariner roster picked up the slack in contributing to a solid all-around team effort.

After giving up an early score on an own goal, Mariner applied relentless pressure for the rest of the match. Seconds after falling behind, Emma Morehead made a determined run through the middle and tied the score. Moments later, Ashley Harwood beat the CRU keeper with a shot off a loose ball in the box.

Desiree Santos put Mariner up 3-1 before half-time after a strong run down the left flank. Morehead and Harwood converted again in the second half, with forward Tori Vargas finishing the scoring.

Kasey Casella was very strong in the midfield while helping Mariner control the play and create several other great scoring opportunities. Mariner girls were helped out by excellent play in goal by keepers, Morgan Stott and Sammy Bucknell.

Mariner's next match will be at Nova SC on Sunday at 2pm.

Under 13 Girls (Maple-D Blue)

Mariner came away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against a tough Rhode Island Rays side, which had opened the scoring midway through the first half.

Mariner started the second half on the offensive by moving the ball well in the attacking third of the field and Alex Medeiros found the back of the net on a nice touch to tie the score. Mariner girls kept battling deep in their opponent's end and a Rays hand ball call resulted in a penalty that Korinna Tsonis drove home.

Once again, Mariner keeper Marissa Ciampi had another excellent performance in goal, though the victory was a complete team effort.

Mariner are now 4-0-2 in league play and next face off against Mission SC at home on Sunday at 2pm.

Under 13 Boys (Maple-D White)

Mariner Boys played a well disciplined match with effort all around to tie 0-0 with Lusitana. Playing on the road, the side adapted extremely well to a completely different game plan that was put forward just before the start of the game as they switched to a 4-5-1 formation.

Jonathan Zucco, Matt Riggi, and Dan Tripp all played a very strong defensive game, and Kevin Pepin once again showed his strength as keeper in keeping the opponent off the scoreboard.

Mariner are 3-1-2 and play next at home to Blackstone AFC on Sunday.

Under 14 Girls (MASC)

Following last week's scoreless tie against the undefeated Lady Crusaders, Mariner stepped up their play another notch to post a 2-0 win over the Bay State Power.

On a beautiful fall Sunday afternoon, Mariner girls played a well executed game, which featured good teamwork and confident ball skills. Twenty minutes into the first half, Therese Morss found the back of the net with an excellent shot. Speedsters Allie Cunningham and Katie Buler also broke away for several shots on the Bay State's goalie during the first period and a dangerous cross by Buler found Brittany O'Dea to score the second goal of the day.

Strong defensive play from Nicole LaBossiere, Kaley Pankowski and Kayla Silva kept out the Bay State forwards. The side's fullbacks also distributed well-placed passes to the Mariner midfielders and forwards to support a strong attack throughout the match.

Sunday's win brought Mariner's league record to 2-2-1, which they will try to improve upon this Sunday at home to Vipers FC.
