Double joy for Mariner
October 17, 2006
Under 13 Boys (Maple-D White)
Mariner put forth a great team effort in their 4-2 win over the Galway Rovers on Sunday. After falling behind in the first half, the team made several adjustments and picked up their game.
The defensive backs, consisting of Tyler Belliveau, Marc Gammell, Andy O'rourke and Matt DaCosta worked hard to hold off the opposition's attacks. They were able to prevent easy shots by marking their men, taking the ball, and feeding the offense to begin their attacks. Kevin Pepin, coming off an ankle injury, played a strong game in goal including stopping a penalty kick.
Mariner play their next game away against Lusitana at 1pm on 22 October.
Under 13 Girls (Maple-D Blue)
Mariner traveled to Fuller Hamlets last Sunday and came away with a fine 2-0 win. Mariner controlled most of the first half with some well executed overlapping runs and combination plays and nearly notched a score when Amy Craig shot just over the crossbar. Moments later, Phoebe Cady followed up with a shot that also went just over.
Within the first ten minutes of the second half, Allyson Pontes found the back of the net to break the scoreless tie. Minutes later, Amy Craig made a strong run on a well placed through ball from center midfielder Alexis Eusebio.
The Mariner defense of Haley Nisbet, Darian Silva, Phoebe Cady and Korrina Tsonis
were impenetrable all match in keeping the Hamlets off the scoreboard. In addition, Laura Bichajian, Mollie Beaulieu, Cali Warner, Kadi Souza and Gina Georgadarellis played a strong game at their outside midfield positions. Forwards, Gabby Kondracki and Alex Medeiros, added some nice touches as they pressed Fuller Hamlets deep into their defensive end. Goalkeeper, Marissa Ciampi, had another outstanding performance, making solid saves.
Mariner are at home to the Rhode Island Rays on 22 October at 2:30pm.
