Mixed weekend for Mariner
October 3, 2006
Under 11 Girls (MAPLE White Division)
Mariner bounced back after two tough loses to even their record at 2-2 by going on the road to defeat the previously unbeaten Greater Boston squad by a final score of 5-0.
Playing in rainy conditions, Mariner got on the scoreboard in the eighth minute when Nicole Simas put away an assist from Haley Dickerson. Mariner went two up five minutes later mark Julia Silverstein scored off a fine cross by Courtlyn Long. After 22 minutes, it was 3-0 when Simas beat the Greater Boston keeper from twenty yards.
Five minutes after the interval, Long got on the score sheet off a well-played through ball from Erin Gallagher and added her second shortly afterwards by beating the goalie one-on-one off a nice assist from Morgan Carney.
The Mariner defense, led by sweeper Courtney Fox and outside backs Emma Porto and Alexa Ferreira, was outstanding all match, as were goalkeepers, Sarah Zielinski and Kristina Georgedarellis.
Mariner plays this weekend in the Columbus Day Weekend Harvest Cup Tournament in Barnstable.
Under 12 Girls (MAPLE Red Division)
Playing on the road in a heavy rainstorm, Mariner lost a tough match to the Scorpions by a final score of 1-0. Mariner played valiantly throughout against a highly skilled opponent in a match that went back and forth all day with both sides struggling to create scoring opportunities against solid defensive play by each team.
Mariner keeper, Morgan Stott, continued her season-long excellence in goal to help her defensive backs stifle the Scorpions attack before, in the closing moments, the Scorpions were awarded a penalty, which was converted, leaving the Mariner side bewildered about what had just happened.
Mariner's next match will be at home against Explosion FC at 2:30pm on Sunday 15 October.
