Mariner collected its second straight shutout victory with a solid 3-0 result over a tough Nor'Easter Stingers squad, with the side's offense backed up by goalkeepers, Morgan Stott and Sammy Bucknell, who played outstandingly well in goal all match to keep the Stingers squad off the scoreboard.
The fullback rotation of Erin Reardon, Madison Catarius, Desiree Santos, Andrea Chaput and Nicole Fusaro helped stifle the Nor'Easter attack with strong defensive play throughout, while in attack, Mariner was relentless with Ashley Harwood, Emma Morehead & Fusaro barely missing on several good scoring opportunities.
The Mariner girls got on the scoreboard early when Tori Vargas collected a rebound in front of the net and used some nice footwork to outmaneuver a defender for an open shot on goal. Bucknell put Mariner up 2-0 later in the first half with a hard shot from outside the eighteen. Katie Wilbur finished the scoring midway through the second half with a perfectly executed touch off a well-played cross from the right flank by Morehead.
Mariner's next match will be against a very tough Scorpions Soccer squad at 2:30pm on Sunday in Pembroke.
Under 13 Girls (MAPLE-D Blue)
The under-13s came away from the Reebok International Headquarters soccer facility in Canton with a well-earned 3-1 win against Eastern Mass FC.
After the two sides traded early goals, Mariner took the lead for good early in
the second half and added a third with just a few minutes remaining.
Mariner next plays at the Nor'easter Stingers at 4pm on Sunday.
Under 14 Girls (MASC)
The U14s played a physical match against the Scorpions on Sunday, which ended in a scoreless tie. Mariner stepped up their play, nearly connecting on several shots created by nice combinations play between the midfielders and forwards.
Brittany O'Dea, just back from an injury, and Rachael Juvinall worked hard in the center distributing scoring opportunities to forwards, Christine O'Donaghue and Therese Morss. Stacy Correia played a solid game as defensive stopper and almost broke the tie with a shot from midfield.
Kelsey Rosa, demonstrating her usual flexibility and quickness, played a fine game in goal, stopping several good shots to keep the Scorpions out.
Mariner to Newton on Sunday for their next match, against the Renegades.
