Solid start for Mariner sides
September 12, 2006

Mariner's premier teams got their fall seasons in the MAPLE league underway on Sunday:

Under 11 Girls

Mariner started their season off on a winning note by defeating North Shore United, 6-0. Dartmouth's Courtney Fox started off the scoring with an unassisted goal a minute and a half into the first half. Two minutes later, Nicole Simas (Dartmouth) netted the second goal off a beautiful pass from Haley Dickerson (Marion). Courtlyn Long (Dartmouth) added two goals (unassisted, Dickerson) and an assist to a Dickerson goal to finish off the first half.

Mariner's defense was solid throughout the whole game. Leading the way on defense were outside backs, Emma Porto (Dartmouth) and Julia Silverstein (Dartmouth), along with sweepers, Alexa Ferreira (Dartmouth) and Simas. The defenders only allowed four shots on goal, which were stopped by keepers, Sarah Zielinski (Dartmouth) and Ferreira. Adding the final goal midway through the second half was Marissa Rocha (Dartmouth) off a pass from Zielinski.

Mariner's next game will be their home opener against Crusaders United at the Mariner fields in Fairhaven at 1pm on Sunday 17 September.

Under 12 Girls

Mariner got their season off to a good start with a solidly played 2-1 victory over Fuller Hamlets. The Mariner girls carried the play most of the way, nearly connecting on several scoring chances set up by some very good combination play by their midfielders and forwards. Meanwhile, the Mariner defensive backs were strong, with outside backs, Sammy Bucknell and MacKenzie Martin, both scoring goals on strong shots from the top of the penalty area.

Both Mariner goals came off rebounds from well-placed corner kicks by Desiree Santos & Bucknell. Center back, Andrea Chaput, and outside back, Madison Catarius, played very well defensively throughout the match to help stymie the Fuller Hamlets' attack. Keeper, Morgan Stott, was solid in goal all game and kept her defensive backs well-organized throughout.

Mariner's next game will be against Western United Soccer Club at 2:30pm on Sunday in Northampton, MA.

Under 13 Girls

Coming off a very good showing at the Bandit's Cup tournament, Mariner Girls played a physical home match against Liverpool FSC, which ended in a 1-1 tie. The Mariner girls had some outstanding defensive play and just missed on an opportunity to break the tie with minutes remaining with a shot that skidded over the crossbar.

During the previous Labor Day weekend, Mariner went undefeated during their round-robin pool play and advanced to the semi-finals of the Bandit's Cup. The Mariner squad played very well in their semi-final match before losing to eventual champion South Shore Select, on a heavily disputed penalty kick.

Mariner will play their next match at home against the South Shore Stingrays at 4pm on Sunday.

Under 13 Boys

Mariner put forth a solid team effort under new coach, Imad Arbain, while posting a 5-0 win over Necleo Sporting.

Dan Tripp started the scoring in the first half, before Nate Houston tok over and added four goals. Andy O'Rourke and Max Kearns were excellent at new positions, while new team members, Matt Riggi and Corey Lopes, stepped in and contributed as though they had been part of the team for years.

Mariner's next game will be at home against Bruno United at 2:30pm on Sunday.

* Starting on Sunday 17 September, Mariner will be hosting its Fall Soccer Academy for U-10 Spring Travel and MAPLE quality players starting on Sunday, September 17. Under the direction of Ray Cabral, Mariner's Technical Director, the academy will focus on age appropriate training sessions for U-10 players who want to gain a competitive edge before their Spring Travel Team or MAPLE tryouts.

The academy will run every Sunday for six weeks, excluding Columbus Day weekend. Each session will last an hour from 2-3pm for girls and 3-4pm for boys. All players will need to bring a ball and water. The cost of the Fall Academy is $90 and will include an academy t-shirt.

Interested players should send an application with a check for payment to the Mariner Youth Soccer Club, P.O. Box 958, Mattapoisett, MA 02739. Applications can be found by visiting Mariner's website. For more information, please contact Ray Cabral at 508-728-1377.
