Shrewsbury celebrates its MTOC championship
|
This is the first year Mass Youth Soccer has played an 8 v 8 format in this age bracket and, subsequently, will be moving all Under-12 age groups to this format after this years observations.
After advancing through their preliminary games, Shrewsbury faced Raynham in
the semi-finals. Raynham scored first with a stellar finish from one of their strikers from about 18 yards out. However, Shrewsbury fought back and with ten minutes left in regulation, equalized off a cross from Paige Elliott to Alexis Nystrom for a one time finish. Overtime came and went without any scoring and so it came down to a penalty shoot-out for advancement … emotions were now at a peak!
When Shrewsbury went down 0-2 in the shootout, things looked bleak. However, with a never say die attitude they fought back! After a goalscoring display during regulation play, Alexis Nystrom donned the gloves and came up with three straight saves which, with the final shooters finishing well, saw SYS through to the final.
The championship game saw Shrewsbury facing BAYS powerhouse, Newton. Shrewsbury struck first on a fine finish by Maddy McKinley. Both teams battled well, but Shrewsbury's power stood tall as McKinley aced another off a corner kick. With minutes to go, the girls finished one more as Meghan Burke got free to the back post and finished low to the corner to start the celebrations.
